From up there, the explosions coming out of the mouth of the volcano are a unique spectacle.
Stromboli is a volcano in permanent explosive activity for 2000 years. On several occasions over an hour, splashes of incandescent lava come out of the crater, accompanied by the sound of explosions. The excursion to the crater is carried out in groups (about 25 people for each) with an authorized mountain guide (€ 28 per person, to be paid on site *).
If you have not chosen to do the ascent/ If you have not chosen to ascend, or if it is not currently authorized, the planned trek is up to the permitted limit of 290 meters * along the path that runs along the Sciara del Fuoco (walking time about 3h30, difference in height: + 290 / -290 m).
It is not possible to spend the night in Stromboli because the seabed too deep does not allow a good anchorage. The captain decides if it is the case, on the moment, if it can anchor or if it is preferable to move on Panarea in order to spend the night.
* The climb to the crater is currently prohibited for safety reasons due to strong eruptive activity.
